Renovation and reconstruction attic De Oost Building

The municipal monument De Oost, the former railroad post office next to the Central Station in Amsterdam was designed in 1923 by Jos Kuipers. The attic, previously used as a storage area and fitness room is a large, high and dark room over the entire width of the building. Ruland Architecten has been assigned by NS Projectconsult to reconstruct this space to form a modern, well-lit office floor with a unique historic character.

To enable this space to be used as offices with enough daylight, the existing skylights on the side of the IJ lake have been enlarged and new skylights have been added. In the roof, a skylight module was installed and the wall, floor and ceiling finishes have been mostly done in light colours.

The height of the room is utilised for installing an extra floor. The construction of this floor has been kept separate from the existing construction.

The original steel lattice construction has been exposed everywhere by using glass for the construction of separations between offices and by dimensioning the separations outside the dimensions of the construction.

New installations have been hidden in floors and ceilings, or if that wasn’t possible, designed to stand out. Interior design accents have been applied by specially designed furniture for pantries and copiers, colour-coded to fit the NS Hispeed house style.
